From Sidelines to Spotlight: Stiller's Unexpected National Call-Up
An Opportunity Arises: Stiller's Ascent Due to Pavlovic's Injury
Reports from Sport Bild and Kicker indicate that Angelo Stiller, a midfielder for Stuttgart, is poised to join the German national team this week. This unexpected call-up comes as a direct result of an injury sustained by Bayern Munich's promising player, Aleksandar Pavlovic. Stiller, who has previously earned five senior caps for his country, now finds himself with a significant chance to impress and potentially stake a claim for a spot in the upcoming World Cup squad.
Nagelsmann's Previous Omissions and a Change in Circumstance
National team coach Julian Nagelsmann has, in the past, overlooked Stiller for national team selection. As recently as November, Nagelsmann provided a clear explanation for Stiller's exclusion from his plans. Furthermore, just before the current March international break, Nagelsmann explicitly stated that he did not foresee a starting role for Stiller during a press conference held by the German Football Association (DFB). However, with Pavlovic's unfortunate injury, this situation may be about to take a dramatic turn, presenting Stiller with an unforeseen pathway into the squad.
Stiller's Potential Role: Filling the Void in Midfield
Aleksandar Pavlovic has been widely considered Nagelsmann's preferred choice to start alongside Bayern Munich teammate Leon Goretzka in a defensive midfield pairing. Nagelsmann has also shown a preference for deploying Joshua Kimmich, Goretzka's close friend and long-time club/national teammate, at right-back. Given the limited options at right-back, it's improbable that Nagelsmann would reunite Goretzka and Kimmich in midfield. This scenario significantly increases the likelihood of Stiller directly stepping into Pavlovic's role. While Borussia Dortmund's Felix Nmecha is currently ranked higher than Stiller in the pecking order, Nmecha is more of an attacking midfielder, similar to Goretzka. Therefore, if Stiller can demonstrate a strong commitment to a defensive role, and if Nagelsmann opts against giving Premier League professionals Pascal Groß and Anton Stach a chance alongside Goretzka, the Munich-born midfielder could very well earn a valuable opportunity to showcase his abilities.
