Its distinctive dial layout has significantly influenced subsequent perpetual calendar chronographs, and its compact 35mm case embodies mid-century design. With only 281 examples ever created, primarily in yellow gold with a few in rose gold or stainless steel, the 1518 is recognized by Phillips as one of the most desirable vintage Patek Philippes available.
The specific rose-gold example featured in this auction, dating from 1948, has remained out of public view until now. Phillips describes its condition as "extraordinary, museum-quality." While no pre-sale estimate has been disclosed, similar rose-gold models have commanded significant prices; a 1946 version sold for $3.8 million at Sotheby’s in 2023, and a steel variant fetched 11 million Swiss francs (approximately $13.9 million) at Phillips in 2016. Paul Boutros and Isabella Proia of Phillips emphasized that the 1518 defines benchmarks in watch collecting, highlighting this particular piece as potentially the best-preserved example to ever emerge on the market, appealing to collectors seeking watches of historical and artistic importance.

Beyond the Patek Philippe 1518, the auction features an array of other distinguished timepieces, including an exceptionally rare F.P. Journe Tourbillon Souverain Anniversaire “Hong Kong.” This piece is one of only five ever produced, making it a highly exclusive item for collectors. Another significant offering is a 1980s Patek Philippe Nautilus Ref. 370011, retailed by Tiffany & Co., which once belonged to the legendary American builder Paul Starrett, renowned for his work on the Empire State Building. Additionally, the auction will present several well-preserved vintage Rolex models, notably two Daytona “Paul Newman” chronographs.
