Long-Lost 'Air Package' Emerges for Gagosian Exhibition
In a thrilling development for the art world, an unfulfilled project by the iconic artist duo Christo and Jeanne-Claude, titled Air Package on a Ceiling, is finally set to grace the walls of Gagosian in London. Scheduled to captivate audiences from May 21st to August 21st, this monumental piece, conceived in 1968, comprises a 52-foot-long, 33-foot-wide inflated structure. Wrapped in rope and subtly illuminated from within, it conjures the image of a cloud emerging from the gallery ceiling.
The journey of this artwork from obscurity to exhibition began in 2018. During an organizational effort in Christo’s studio, his studio manager, Lorenza Giovanelli, stumbled upon a hidden box. This unexpected find contained the meticulously detailed scale model of the 'Air Package,' complete with electrical wiring to demonstrate its intended lighting. Giovanelli marvelled at its pristine condition, noting that it had been preserved from dust and sunlight for half a century. Originally envisioned for the Institute of Contemporary Art (ICA) in Philadelphia, the project was shelved due to the technological limitations of the era. The upcoming Gagosian show will realize the piece based on these original models and extensive preparatory drawings and collages.
Christo and Jeanne-Claude, renowned for their large-scale environmental art, frequently explored the concept of 'wrapping' objects, including air, within translucent polyethylene and rope during the 1960s.
