Since 2020, the skilled sculptor and animator, Charles Young, has been diligently constructing hundreds of miniature buildings, drawing profound inspiration from Japanese costume designer and painter Sanzo Wada’s seminal work, “A Dictionary of Color Combinations.” This foundational text, which even boasts a delightful interactive online version, has guided Young in his pursuit of harmonious and striking color palettes. His growing collection showcases a wide spectrum of architectural designs, with a particular emphasis on the interplay of different hues. As of now, Young has completed an impressive 258 buildings from the dictionary’s first volume, which focuses on dual-color schemes, with only 90 remaining to finish this segment. Beyond two-color compositions, he has also ventured into creating numerous examples featuring complex, multi-color combinations. Art enthusiasts will have the opportunity to experience Young’s extraordinary creations firsthand in June, as he prepares to unveil 120 captivating three-color paper sculptures at the esteemed Galerie Handwerk in Munich. Furthermore, Young’s artistic repertoire extends beyond paper; he also crafts architecturally inspired sculptures from wood and woven cane, with select pieces currently on display at the Kirkcudbright Galleries and MacLaurin Gallery in Scotland.
