The Sony World Photography Awards for 2026 has proudly declared its four major winners, culminating in the esteemed "Photographer of the Year" title within the Professional division. Additionally, the competition recognized the top photographers across ten distinct categories in its Professional contest, highlighting a spectrum of photographic mastery.
Citlali Fabián Crowned 2026 Photographer of the Year
Mexican photographer Citlali Fabián has achieved the prestigious accolade of "Photographer of the Year 2026" for her compelling series, "Bilha, Stories of my Sisters." Fabián also secured first place in the "Creative" category, underscoring her innovative approach to visual art.
Hailing from the Yalalteca Indigenous community in Mexico and currently residing in London, Fabián's winning submission delves into the intricate relationship between identity, geographical location, migration experiences, and community ties through the lens of photography.
Monica Allende, Chair of the 2026 Professional Jury, lauded Fabián's profound ability to engage with critical themes of visibility and representation. Allende emphasized how Fabián's methodology mirrors Indigenous cultural practices, where narratives are often co-created through dialogue and shared experiences rather than singular viewpoints. Fabián's collaborative process with her subjects, Allende noted, actively involves them in shaping their stories, thereby amplifying the often-overlooked presence, resilience, and achievements of women within broader societal and cultural contexts.
For her remarkable achievement, Fabián receives a cash prize of $25,000, a comprehensive Sony Digital Imaging equipment package, and an exclusive opportunity to present a solo exhibition at the Sony World Photography Awards 2027 showcase.
Spotlight on Professional Category Champions
In the 2026 Professional competition, photographers submitted a collection of five to ten images across ten distinct categories. Following the announcement of finalists last month, the category winners were celebrated at the Sony World Photography Awards gala. As Citlali Fabián, the overall Photographer of the Year, also triumphed in the "Creative" category, this particular category is not individually highlighted below. Elle Leontiev Recognized as Open Photographer of the Year 2026
Distinct from the Professional competition, which features photographic series, the Open competition honors exceptional individual images. Although the winners and finalists of the Open categories were announced in February, the ultimate victor has now been named. This year, Australian photographer Elle Leontiev has been crowned Open Photographer of the Year for her striking image, "The Barefoot Volcanologist," which also triumphed in the Portraiture category. Leontiev's achievement comes with a $5,000 cash prize and a Sony imaging kit.
Leontiev expressed immense gratitude, sharing her journey from dreaming of being featured at a past Sony World Photography Awards exhibition to now seeing her work recognized. She reflected that this win is a powerful affirmation that quiet aspirations, pursued with dedication and heart, can indeed come to fruition.
Jubair Ahmed Arnob: Student Photographer of the Year 2026
This year's Student competition challenged photography and art students globally to interpret the theme "Together." Aspiring photographers approached this broad concept with diverse and innovative visual solutions. The jury ultimately selected Jubair Ahmed Arnob from Counter Foto — A Center for Visual Arts in Bangladesh, as the Student Photographer of the Year. Arnob's winning series, "The Place Where I Used to Play," offers a poignant exploration of Dhaka, Bangladesh's evolving urban landscape and how its inhabitants adapt to rapid environmental changes collectively. Arnob shared his elation, describing the award as a dream realized that fuels his passion for capturing the world through his lens.
Philip Kangas Named Youth Photographer of the Year 2026
The Sony World Photography Awards' Youth competition, designed for photographers aged 19 and under, sought the most compelling images from the past year. Philip Kangas, a 16-year-old Swedish photographer, emerged as the winner for his photograph, "Saving History From the Flames." This powerful image captures firefighters heroically rescuing artworks from the Royal Academy of Fine Arts in Stockholm during a fire, symbolizing the preservation of cultural heritage amidst crisis.
