The MIZU NO IE - Izu Diving Retreat, envisioned by NASCA, is a testament to architectural integration with nature, nestled within the breathtaking Fuji-Hakone-Izu National Park in Ito, Japan. Completed in 2024 and spanning 293 square meters, this project embodies a philosophy that seeks to strip away modern constrictions, allowing occupants to fully embrace the elemental forces of their surroundings. The design deliberately blurs the boundaries between the built environment and the natural landscape, inviting a profound connection with the water, air, and lush verdure of the Izu Highlands.
Situated in a pristine section of the Izu Highlands, offering sweeping views towards Mount Omuro, the retreat is more than just a structure; it is a gateway to sensory liberation. The architects' core concept revolves around creating a space where individuals can shed the layers of conventional living and become 'clothed' in the very essence of nature. This involves thoughtful consideration of natural light, ventilation, and the use of materials that resonate with the site's inherent beauty, fostering an environment where mind and body are directly embraced by the climate and landscape.
The design journey began with a deep appreciation for the unspoiled character of the site. The architects meticulously planned the retreat to harmonize with the existing topography and ecosystem, ensuring minimal disruption to the delicate balance of Fuji-Hakone-Izu National Park. Every design choice, from the orientation of the buildings to the selection of indigenous flora, was made with the intention of enhancing the symbiotic relationship between human habitation and the natural world.
NASCA's approach for MIZU NO IE is rooted in the belief that architecture should facilitate, rather than dictate, human interaction with the environment. The retreat's spaces are crafted to evoke a sense of calm and introspection, encouraging visitors to rediscover their senses. Whether it's the sound of the ocean, the scent of the forest, or the feel of the breeze, the design amplifies these natural experiences, creating a sanctuary where one can truly unwind and reconnect with primal instincts.
The MIZU NO IE - Izu Diving Retreat transcends the typical definition of accommodation, offering an immersive experience that celebrates the raw beauty of its Japanese setting. It stands as a beacon of sustainable and sensory-rich architecture, reminding us of the profound impact nature can have on our well-being when allowed to permeate our living spaces.
