Foster + Partners, working alongside Dar Al-Handasah, has publicly presented the comprehensive blueprint for Al Najd Agricultural City, a vast 54-million-square-foot development designed to function as a fully autonomous agricultural and residential hub. This innovative project is strategically aligned with Oman Vision 2040, a national agenda focused on enhancing food security, diversifying the national economy, and fostering environmentally conscious growth.
The conceptual framework for Al Najd Agricultural City is deeply rooted in Oman's historical connection between farming practices and human settlements. Situated within the fertile lands of the Al Najd region, the city's design centers around a concentrated urban core enveloped by an intricate network of agricultural plots, varying in size from 10 to 200 hectares. This multi-layered planning approach seamlessly extends productive landscapes into public spaces, including parks, plazas, courtyards, and green corridors, thereby creating an environment where food production is intrinsically woven into the fabric of daily urban existence. The urban center is meticulously planned to accommodate a population of approximately 13,000 residents and generate 6,500 employment opportunities. Residential zones are interconnected with essential services such as educational institutions, healthcare facilities, cultural venues, religious sites, and commercial areas through a system of shaded pedestrian pathways, complemented by a robust public transportation network. These include shade netting to control sun exposure and temperature, agrivoltaic systems that merge solar energy generation with farming, and aquaponic techniques for closed-loop cultivation.
